JFE Steel Corporation announced the construction of a large-scale, high-efficiency electric arc furnace at its West Japan Works in Kurashiki. This furnace is part of the company's broader efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in the steel industry, aligning with Japan's environmental goals.

The project was recently approved by the Japanese government and partially funded by a national grant, with a maximum allocation of 104.5 billion yuan. Additionally, the furnace has an annual steel production capacity of 2 million mt, marking just the beginning of energy efficiency improvements that could transform global steel industry operations.

The uniqueness of this electric arc furnace lies in its ability to integrate advanced steelmaking technologies. In its pursuit of reducing carbon emissions, JFE Steel is developing technological innovations, such as using hydrogen as a reducing agent in steel production. This process is currently being tested with support from Japan's Green Innovation Fund, aiming to produce high-quality, low-carbon steel.
